Gender Equality Scheme
Foreword by the Chairman
The Office of Communications, Ofcom, is responsible for regulation across the range of electronic communications, covering television, radio, telecommunications and spectrum use. We have statutory duties derived principally from the Communications Act 2003, as well as from other UK and EU legislation and regulations.
Those statutory duties include obligations under the Equality Act 2006 intended to promote equality of opportunity and good relations between women and men. As an employer, Ofcom is also committed to building and maintaining an environment in which discrimination and harassment is not tolerated and diversity amongst colleagues is valued.
These commitments are central to the work of Ofcom. We must strive to ensure that they are integrated into the way in which Ofcom functions, both in our own workplace and in the fulfilment of our duties as the statutory regulator.
This draft Gender Equality Scheme (GES) – published today for public consultation – has been drawn up in accordance with the requirements of the Equality Act. Ofcom’s aim is to apply its policies, in accordance with both the spirit as well as the letter of the law, to protect women and men against sexual discrimination and to ensure gender equality amongst Ofcom colleagues and the sector as a whole.
David Currie
