Westminster Media Forum ‘Implementing media literacy: empowerment, participation and responsibility’

On 27 October the Westminster Media Forum (www.westminsterforumprojects.co.uk/mediaforum) held a seminar on media literacy chaired by Danny Alexander MP & Roger Gale MP. The keynote speakers, Robin Blake (Ofcom) and Heather Rabbatts (Head of Education, Channel 4 and Chair of the Media Literacy Task Force) gave an overview of Ofcom’s approach to media literacy and the work of the Task Force respectively. Speakers from the BBC, Cardiff University and Open Democracy discussed the ways in which developments in communications technology had enabled the ‘ordinary citizen’ to take a more active role in the production of news. Other organisations including the BFI and Media Smart talked about their work with media literacy.

Media literacy during adult learners’ week

Date: 21 – 27 May 2005

Ofcom worked closely with The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education - England and Wales (NIACE) in the run up to and during Adult Learners' Week (21-27 May 2005). Adult Learners' Week is the UK's largest festival and celebration of adult learning and, in 2005, for the first time media literacy was one of the key themes. A Panacea for all ills: Can media literacy fulfil expectations?

On 17 March 2005 Ofcom hosted a joint Ofcom-ippr half day conference looking at current media literacy initiatives and considering the key themes to creating a media literate population.

Emotional literacy, political literacy and the media

Report: Emotional literacy, political literacy and the media

On 24 November 2004 Ofcom hosted a seminar exploring emotional literacy, political literacy and the media. The event was jointly organized by Ofcom and Bournemouth Media School’s Centre for Public Communication Research and Centre for Creative Media Research. Attendees were drawn mainly from academia with further representatives from broadcasters and other organisations. Who needs media literacy? A public debate

On Wednesday 28th July 2004 the Institute of Education’s Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media hosted a public debate on media literacy as part of the ‘Digital Generations’ conference.
