What is Ofcom doing to promote media literacy?

We have set out our priorities for media literacy in our statement (see link at bottom of page) of 2 November 2004. Our initial focus, summarised below, will be threefold.

Research

We will research the levels of media literacy in all sections of society. This will give us sound evidence from which we, in partnership with our stakeholders, can direct our future work.

Connecting, partnering & signposting

We also aim to add value to existing work by connecting, partnering & signposting. This strand of work will identify and highlight existing media literacy initiatives. It will also direct people to advice and guidance concerning new communications technologies.

Labelling

Ofcom will invite key stakeholders to constitute a working group to investigate how viewers prefer to receive information about challenging content, particularly in homes with digital television.
