Update on Broadcast Advertising Co-regulation
Deregulation and Contracting Out Act Order laid before Parliament
On 10 June 2004, Department for Culture, Media and Sport Ministers laid before Parliament a draft Order which would allow Ofcom to contract out most of its broadcast advertising regulatory functions to a new co-regulatory system operating under the banner of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). It is hoped that Parliamentary approval for the project will be given by the end of July, which should allow the new system to be launched in late Autumn.
Memorandum of Understanding
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreed between Ofcom and the interested parties within the ASA, together with an indicative draft version of the Authorisation, in which Ofcom authorises the ASA to takeover certain of its functions, has been placed in the libraries of both Houses of Parliament for reference. The MOU can also be viewed from the link below.
