Ofcom ADS Trial Extension Announcement

Ofcom is pleased to announce that the ADS (Audio Distribution Systems) trial is being extended with a proposed end date of 30 June 2007. This date will however be kept under review and is subject to Ofcom’s final conclusions on the issues raised in its recent consultation about the appropriate usage of this spectrum.

This trial extension is to ensure continuity of the trial process whilst a permanent decision on the usage of this spectrum is made and appropriate arrangements subsequently put in place.

So long as the ADS trial continues, ADS applications will continue to be issued by JFMG (as agents for Ofcom) and Ofcom will, through JFMG, seek to ensure that making this spectrum available to Audio Distribution Systems will not adversely affect any existing users of the spectrum.

Once Ofcom reaches a final decision regarding ADS policy, this will be communicated publicly by means of a formal policy statement. Should the consultation proposals for a permanent licensing regime for ADS services be accepted as the way forward, a series of technical issues would need to be resolved before a decision could be made on the proper process for an ADS licensing regime. If such a regime is put in place, those operating under a trial licence would be required to apply for a new licence under the new arrangements.
