Cost of using your mobile abroad (international roaming)
Thanks to the new European regulation, in future no one will be charged more than 38 pence per minute to make a call and no more than 19 pence per minute to receive a call anywhere in Europe.
Providers will introduce a new 'Eurotariff' at different times over the summer, and will offer varying rates - although none will exceed the maximum permitted under the Euro tariff (38ppm for calls made and 19ppm for calls received). Some providers have already introduced a Euro tariff while some will take a little longer. The table below explains when customers on some of the main providers will have access to the new tariff.
| Provider | Making calls (ppm) | Receiving calls (ppm) | Date available |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 25 | 10 | 30 August |
| Fresh | 30 | 19 | 30 August |
| O2 | 35 | 18 | 20 July |
| Orange | 38 | 19 | 30 August |
| Tesco | 35 | 15 | 13 July |
| T-Mobile | 38 | 19 | 30 August |
| Virgin | 38 | 19 | 30 August |
| Vodafone | 38 | 19 | 30 August |
Before travelling abroad, you should first check with your operator to see if they have a deal that suits you better than its default roaming tariff.
The European Commission’s website, europa.eu.int/information_society/activities/roaming/index_en.htm also provides consumer information on European roaming charges.
