Broadcast Radio -
Radio reception and interference

Interference from 'pirate' radio stations

Illegal broadcasters – so-called ‘pirate’ radio stations – can cause serious problems for local communities.

They can, for example:

  • Cause interference to safety-of-life radio networks, e.g. police, fire service, ambulance and air traffic control
  • Transmit offensive material that could incite racial hatred or encourage crime and disorder
  • Drown out legitimate radio stations, denying listeners their choice of music or news
  • Put lives at risk by installing unsafe aerials on tower blocks and tapping into high-voltage power supplies for communal lifts

If you want to tell us about an illegal broadcaster, you can do so here: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/inter/radio/293512/
