A super-fast future
Video briefing
Video of Chinyelu Onwurah, Head of Telecoms Technology, discussing delivering super-fast broadband in the UK
Ofcom has launched an action plan to help UK consumers reap the full benefits of super-fast broadband.
This new fibre-based technology offers tremendous opportunities for consumers and businesses.
It could revolutionise both home entertainment and the way we communicate as a nation.
Fibre-optic
For example, at the moment broadband is delivered via copper wires – giving customers headline speeds of around 8 megabits per second (Mbps).
But upgrading these wires to fibre-optic cables could increase speeds to up to 100 Mbps.
This would then open up a whole host of possibilities and new uses.
For example, families would be able to perform several different tasks at once – such as internet downloading, gaming over the web or watching movies on high-definition TV.
We may also be able to talk to friends and relatives via video links, download albums in seconds and work from home more easily.
Consumer choice
At the same time, fibre-based technology could also bring fast web access to people and communities who don’t yet enjoy the benefits of broadband.
Ofcom has already taken the lead in driving forward the super-fast broadband debate, with an initial consultation on the subject.
Today’s proposals build on that and are designed to make it easier and more attractive for telecoms firms to invest in installing fibre-optic technology.
This will in turn ensure competition in the market and provide greater choice for consumers.
New build homes
Our proposals also seek to ensure that there is a smooth and timely switch from traditional copper to fibre products.
Fibre technology is already being included in new housing developments in London, Kent, Salford and Belfast.
So today we’re also publishing new regulations to ensure consumers moving into such developments will be able to choose from a variety of broadband suppliers.
Ofcom’s Chief Executive, Ed Richards said: 'I am delighted that investment in fibre is already underway and other plans are taking shape.
'Fibre networks are one of the most exciting developments in communications that the UK has ever seen.
'Ofcom’s plan of action will encourage further investment while promoting and sustaining competition so we can all benefit.'
Broadband blog
Ofcom will continue to work with stakeholders and will publish a further statement on super-fast broadband next spring.
The latest consultation document includes an interactive executive summary where you can leave your comments.
