Future of regional news
The current system of public service broadcasting is facing major changes if it is to survive past the digital TV switchover in 2012.
That's because the rising costs of PSB programming are already beginning to outweigh the benefits for commercial broadcasters like ITV.
One area that is already under pressure is the provision of regional news on the ITV network
But at the same time Ofcom's extensive research has underlined how people value television from their own area, especially news programmes.
Nations and regions
That's why we've put forward an ambitious plan for the future delivery of news through independently funded news consortia.
They would replace the current provision on the Channel 3 slot in the nations and regions.
