Ofcom announces appointment of Chief Economist
Dr. Helen Weeds has been appointed as Chief Economist at Ofcom, the UK’s new communications regulator. Helen will be responsible for leading a small team of economists within the Strategy and Market Developments group providing expert economic analysis across Ofcom’s competition and regulatory work and wider strategic reviews.
For the last two years, Helen has been a Principal at Lexecon Ltd, London, where she advised on a wide range of competition and merger inquiries and regulatory proceedings in the UK, EU and other jurisdictions. Helen is also Lecturer in Economics at the University of Essex.
Previously, Helen was Lecturer in Economics at Warwick University and a Junior Research Fellow at Cambridge University. During these periods she also worked as a freelance consultant advising on competition cases, regulation and financial issues.
Ed Richards, Ofcom Senior Partner, Strategy & Market Developments, said: “Helen and her team will be responsible for leading Ofcom’s thinking on economic regulation and competition analysis and will provide us with economic expertise on a full range of projects and cases, from the Public Service Broadcasting review through to spectrum trading. Helen and her team will work closely with colleagues across Ofcom, especially in the Competition and Markets group. She will bring considerable expertise to our team and I am delighted that she has decided to join us.”
