William Webb honoured by Royal Academy of Engineering

Ofcom today announced that its senior technologist William Webb has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, an honour reserved for the UK’s highest achievers in the field of science and technology.

The Royal Academy of Engineering describes William Webb as “an internationally respected engineer who has had significant influence on the world of mobile radio, leading standardisation processes and wireless implementation strategy in government and industry. He is particularly noted for his experience and ability to apply his skills to the academic, industrial and governmental sectors.”

Professor Webb, also head of Ofcom’s research and development team, is responsible for guiding Ofcom’s approach to new technologies. He is the author of the Spectrum Framework Review which received widespread support for its proposal to adopt a market-led approach to spectrum management. In 2005 he will lead Ofcom’s drive to encourage innovation in wireless communication services.

Previously, Professor Webb worked for a range of communications consultancies advising on hardware design, computer simulation, propagation modelling, spectrum management and strategy development. Professor Webb also spent three years providing strategic management across Motorola’s entire communications portfolio. He has a first class honours degree in electronics, a PhD and an MBA.

“I am extremely honoured to join such a distinguished group of peers,” said Professor Webb. “The Royal Academy of Engineering uses its unique membership’s vast breadth of experience to further the art and practice of engineering and I look forward to participating in its important work.”

Ends.
