Ofcom awards new FM commercial radio licence for Rotherham
Ofcom today announces the award of the new FM local commercial radio licence for Rotherham.
By the closing date of 8 February 2006, Ofcom received three applications for the Rotherham licence. After giving careful consideration to each of the applications submitted, the Ofcom Radio Licensing Committee has decided to award the licence to:
Rother FM, PO Box 622, Rotherham, S60 9AY.
Contact: Matt Jones Telephone: 01709 366080
Email: mjones@rotherfm.co.uk
Rother FM is wholly-owned by Lincs FM Group Limited. It will provide “a truly local radio station for Rotherham with a high quality news and information service that puts Rotherham first, and a popular and distinctive blend of music - a station designed to appeal to adults and children alike.”
The adult (aged 15+) population of the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council area is around 200,000; however due to the limited frequency resource available for this service, it will not be possible to serve the entire borough. The exact coverage will be determined by the location of the transmission site and other technical characteristics. The proposed frequency, 96.1 MHz, for this licence is subject to international agreement on radio spectrum usage.
Ofcom expects Rother FM to begin broadcasting at the earliest opportunity and no later than two years from this award date.
Ofcom will publish a statement setting out the key determining factors for the award of this licence shortly.
The licence will be issued for a twelve year period.
Ends.
