Ofcom advertises new FM commercial radio licences for Manchester and Aberdeen

Ofcom today advertises two new local FM commercial radio licences. One licence is advertised for Manchester and the other for Aberdeen.

Manchester

Ofcom is advertising a new local FM commercial radio licence to cover Manchester and the surrounding area.

Ofcom estimates that this licence could achieve coverage of an area with an adult (aged 15+) population of around 1,450,000. The exact coverage will be determined by the location of the transmission site and other technical characteristics. The proposed frequency for this licence, 106.1 MHz, is subject to international agreement on radio spectrum usage.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 3.00 p.m. on 5 October 2006. A non-refundable fee of £25,000 will be payable for each application submitted.

Aberdeen

Ofcom is also today inviting applications for a licence to provide an FM commercial radio service to cover Aberdeen and the surrounding area.

Ofcom estimates that this licence could achieve coverage of an area with an adult (aged 15+) population of around 240,000. The exact coverage will be determined by the location of the transmission site and other technical characteristics. The proposed frequencies for this licence are subject to international agreement on radio spectrum usage.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 3.00 p.m. on 5 October 2006. A non-refundable fee of £5,000 will be payable for each application submitted.

General information

Both licences will be issued for a twelve year period. All applications for these licences will be published on the Ofcom website as soon as is practicable after the closing date.
