Ofcom report sets out next steps in digital switchover
Following the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Regional Radiocommunication Conference earlier this year Ofcom announced on June 30 that an international frequency plan had been agreed to deliver television digital switchover in the UK. With the international coordination completed and the associated detailed radio spectrum planning now well underway, Ofcom is now publishing an overview of the work in hand to ensure that consumers benefit fully from digital switchover.
Key areas of work include:
GOVERNMENT
- Setting the timetable for switchover
- Establishing a Targeted Help Scheme for those most likely to face difficulties in switching
- Encouraging manufacturers and retailers to develop and market digital television equipment
DIGITAL UK
- Communicating with viewers about plans for switchover in their region, addressing concerns and building viewer confidence
- Providing information and advice to viewers to help them prepare for switchover
- Working with retailers to train staff on switchover
OFCOM
- Ensuring commercial broadcasters meet their licence obligations to support switchover
- Delivering a frequency plan to ensure that digital terrestrial television will be available to at least 98.5 per cent of homes post switchover – the same proportion as currently receive analogue broadcasts
- Providing market data and consumer research on digital television and switchover
