Channel 4 Chairman reappointment
The Ofcom Board today announced that Luke Johnson had been reappointed as Chairman of the Channel 4 Television Corporation for an additional three year term.
The decision reflects Luke Johnson’s achievements since his appointment as Chairman in January 2004, during which period the Corporation has increased its audience share, attracted positive support for its programme schedule and improved its profitability. Under Luke Johnson’s chairmanship, the Channel 4 Board has helped to focus the organisation on its public service obligations and has provided effective guidance in support of the launch of new services on digital multichannel and online.
The reappointment will provide important continuity as Channel 4 accelerates its preparations for an all-digital broadcasting future and as Ofcom begins a planned financial review of the Corporation later this year. The review will assess the extent to which the Corporation provides value for money and will examine its long-term future funding requirements through and after digital switchover.
Under Section 23 of the Broadcasting Act 1990, Ofcom is responsible for overseeing the appointment of the Chairman of the Channel 4 Board. Luke Johnson’s reappointment has been formally approved by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell.
Ofcom Chairman David Currie said: “Luke is an excellent Chairman and ambassador for Channel 4, combining a commercial focus with a strong personal commitment to the principles of public service broadcasting.”
