Ofcom launches new price comparison scheme
Ofcom today concluded its review of consumer policy which sets the framework for Ofcom’s future approach to consumer issues and concerns. This includes a new price comparison scheme to help consumers choose between providers of fixed, mobile and international telephony, digital TV and internet services.
In February Ofcom consulted on its proposed approach to designing and implementing consumer policy. The statement – published today – sets out its approach to
- protecting consumers from scams and unfair practices;
- providing adequate information to allow consumers to make informed choices;
- ensuring switching processes that allow consumers to move between providers quickly and easily; and
- making sure that all consumers – including vulnerable members of society – are able to profit from increased competition.
New price comparison accreditation scheme
Ofcom’s research shows that consumers are more likely to shop around if they have access to quality-assured comparison services. It also shows a low level of awareness of existing price comparison services. Ofcom’s scheme – launched today - will:
- invite applications from all organisations, so long as the calculator is accurate and easy to use;
- ensure that price comparison calculators are accurate, transparent, comprehensive and available to all consumers, including disabled people and those without internet access; and
- promote consumer awareness of accredited calculators;
Communications markets are becoming increasingly complex as providers begin to offer bundles that include a variety of services. The new scheme will encourage price comparison services that allow consumers to choose between both individual and bundled offers.
The statement, along with details of the accreditation scheme, can be found on the Ofcom website - see Related Items.
