Ofcom awards two new community radio licences

Ofcom today announces the award of two new community radio licences, the first licence awards made as part of its second round of community radio licensing.

Community radio is a new tier of radio which complements the mix of services already provided by the BBC and commercial radio sectors. Community radio services cover a small geographical area and are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to enrich a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

10 Radio will provide a radio service that meets the needs of the local community for news, information, discussion and debate and also entertainment through drama, comedy and, not least, music.

Stroud FM will make radio for the people by the people, in the creative heartland of the Cotswolds.

Licences are awarded for a five-year period.

A statement setting out the main determining factors for the award of the two community radio licences set out above will be available shortly from the Ofcom website.
