Ofcom announces new content board member

Ofcom today announced the appointment of Chris Banatvala as an executive member of its Content Board. The Content Board is the committee of the main Ofcom Board with delegated responsibility for content issues.

As a member of the Content Board, Chris will sit as a full member of both Ofcom’s Content Sanctions Committee and its Fairness Committee.

Chris is Director of Standards at Ofcom with responsibility for the implementation and policy development of standards regulation in broadcasting. Chris was responsible for the development of Ofcom's first Broadcasting Code, which sets standards for television and radio broadcasts. Chris was formally a journalist on Channel 4 News, before joining the Independent Television Commission where he was Head of Factual Programmes.

Philip Graf, Chairman of the Content Board and Deputy Chairman of Ofcom, said: “I am delighted that Chris will be joining the Content Board”.

He added: “Chris brings a wealth of broadcast experience in the area of audience protection; including harm and offence, accuracy and impartiality, fairness and privacy.”

The appointment will begin with immediate effect.
