Ofcom announces new chairman of broadcast training body
Ofcom today announces the appointment of Stephen Whittle OBE as chairman of the BTSR (Broadcast Training and Skills Regulator) replacing Ralph Tabberer who resigned last year.
Under the Communications Act 2003 Ofcom is required to promote training and development across the broadcasting industry and to ensure that the arrangements made by broadcasters are effective. The BTSR has been established jointly by Ofcom, UK television and radio broadcasters, and Skillset to carry out the second of these roles.
Stephen Whittle was Controller Editorial Policy at the BBC from 2001 to 2006 and before that Director of the Broadcasting Standards Commission. His career also spans programme production and journalism. He was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting in 2006.
Commenting on this appointment, Mr Whittle said:
“Training and development are crucial to keeping British content ahead of the world. I look forward to working with the broadcasting industry to ensure that the people who work in it have the skills they need, now and in the future, to serve their audiences even better.”
