Sean Williams to stand down from Ofcom Board to take up new role at OFT

The Ofcom Board today announced that its Competition Partner Sean Williams will be standing down from the Ofcom Board to take up a new role as Executive Director of Markets and Projects at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), with effect from late spring.

Sean Williams joined Ofcom in March 2003 and was promoted to the Board in January 2006. As Competition Partner he is responsible for the development and enforcement of Ofcom’s economic regulation and competition policies in communications markets, including leadership of Ofcom’s strategic review of the UK telecommunications market and all merger analysis in the sector.

Ofcom Chairman David Currie said: "Sean has been a significant contributor to the development of Ofcom and has played a key role in shaping the organisation’s approach to economic regulation. On behalf of the Board I would like to thank him for all he has achieved."

Ofcom Chief Executive Ed Richards said: "Sean brings great intellect, knowledge and energy to the complex and detailed work of competition policy and investigation. He is a tremendous asset for any organisation, and we wish him well in his new role."

Ofcom Competition Partner Sean Williams said: "My time at Ofcom has been fascinating and stimulating, however it is now time to move on and take on new challenges."

Sean Williams is also a non-executive director of Williams Lea Group Limited, a £450m international business services company. He was previously a partner of LEK Consulting, a strategy consulting firm, from 1997 to 2003, where he advised on competition and business strategy issues, and a special advisor in the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit from 1995 to 1997.

Ofcom will seek to appoint a successor in due course.

Ends.
