Completed acquisition by British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC of a 17.9% shareholding in ITV PLC

On 26 February the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry issued an intervention notice asking the Office of Communications (‘Ofcom’) to conduct an initial investigation into whether the acquisition by British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc of a 17.9% shareholding in ITV plc raises public interest issues which are or may be relevant to a consideration of that transaction.

In accordance with that notice Ofcom will now investigate and report to the Secretary of State on the specified media public interest consideration in section 58(2C)(a) of the Enterprise Act 2002 by 27 April.

The specified media public interest consideration is the need, in relation to every different audience in the United Kingdom or in a particular area or locality of the United Kingdom, for there to be sufficient plurality of persons with control of the media enterprises serving that audience.
