Ofcom board changes
Ofcom today announced the appointment of Mike McTighe as a new Non-Executive Board member for a three year term commencing on 1 September 2007. In addition, Ofcom also announced that Millie Banerjee has been re-appointed as a Non-Executive Board Member until 31 December 2009.
These appointments were made by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, James Purnell and by the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, John Hutton.
Ofcom Chairman David Currie said: “Mike’s considerable industry experience in global communications businesses will be of great value to Ofcom and I and my Board colleagues welcome him to the Board; I am sure we will all benefit from his knowledge and commercial experience.”
David Currie added: “I am also delighted that we will continue to benefit from Millie’s insight and knowledge across the range of Ofcom’s activities; Millie has been with Ofcom from the outset and her contribution to Ofcom’s development has been recognised by this most welcome re-appointment.”
Background
Ofcom is an independent statutory corporation accountable to Parliament. The Ofcom Board provides strategic direction for the organisation, with a Non-Executive Chairman and Deputy Chairman, four Non-Executive Directors and three Executive Directors including the Chief Executive.
Non-Executive Members of the Ofcom Board (including the Chair and Deputy Chair) are appointed jointly by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and by the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, under the provisions of the Office of Communications Act 2002.

1. Mike McTighe is currently non-executive Chairman of Pace Micro Technology plc, a director of London Metal Exchange Holdings Ltd and the Alliance & Leicester plc and Chairman of a number of private equity backed technology firms. Previously he was Chairman and CEO of Carrier1 International SA, and before that Executive Director & Chief Executive, Global Operations of Cable and Wireless plc. Prior to these appointments, he was with Philips of the Netherlands, Motorola, and GE.
Mike McTighe is the non-executive Chairman of Pace Micro Technology plc which, among its other activities supplies set top boxes to Ofcom-regulated companies. In line with the Board's Conflicts of Interests policy, Mike McTighe will not see papers on or take part in Board discussions in relation to those companies or any other matter which could reasonably be expected to affect the share price of Pace Micro Technology plc.
2. Millie Banerjee was appointed to the Ofcom Board in September 2002 for a five year term. She is National Chair of The Consumer Council for Postal Services (Postwatch), Chair of the Carnegie UK Trust and a Member of the Advisory Board of the Tanaka Imperial College Business School.
Previously she spent 25 years with BT (1970-1995), culminating at Director level in BT Products and Services Division, followed by Senior Vice President ICO Global Communications (1995-2000). She has been a member of the Strategy Board of the Cabinet Office (1998-2005).
She has held several non-executive board appointments including: Channel 4 (2000-2002); the Strategic Rail Authority (2000-2005); the Sector Skills Development Agency (2002-2004); the Prisons Board (1990-1995); a Board Member of Focus (1994-1998); and a member of the governing body of South Bank University (1993-1997).
