Ofcom awards six new community radio licences

Ofcom today announces the award of six new community radio licences.

Community radio services typically cover a small geographical area and are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to enrich a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

Ofcom has awarded community radio licences in the following areas:

The new community radio licensees in each of these areas are:

SINE FM, Doncaster

SINE FM will provide a platform for creative expression and a distinctive, participatory and accessible community radio service celebrating the diversity of Doncaster’s inner town wards.

Redroad FM, Harthill

Redroad FM will serve the rural communities of South Rotherham, with a particular focus on young people.

Vixen 87, Market Weighton and Pocklington

Vixen 87 will provide a community radio service for Market Weighton as well as Pocklington and surrounding villages in this rural area. It will strive to provide an information service of help to the lives of people in these communities.

TMCR will serve the people of Thorne and Moorends, it will be from the community, for the community, by the community.

Flame CCR, Wirral

Flame Christian and Community Radio will serve the needs of Wirral Christians through radio broadcasting by people within the community. It will also broadcast to the community at large to increase awareness of the local Christian community, and to stimulate interaction between Christians and the community at large.

Licences are awarded for a five-year period.

A statement setting out the main determining factors for the award of the six community radio licences referred to above will be available shortly from the Ofcom website.
