Ofcom awards three new community radio licences

Ofcom today announces the award of three new community radio licences.

Community radio services typically cover a small geographical area and are provided on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to enrich a particular geographical community or a community of interest.

Ofcom has awarded community radio licences to the following applicants, each of which will provide a service in Leicester:

EAVA FM will serve East Africans in Leicester. It will aim to socially develop, inform and entertain this diverse community through broadcasting which includes a combination of local news, enterprise, music, information, cultural and educational programmes, all supported by community members and volunteers, private organisations and the public sector in Leicester.

Demon FM

Based at De Montfort University, and working with other further and higher education institutions, Demon FM will broadcast to young people (primarily between the ages of 16 and 30) within Leicester. Output will include programming made by members of the target community, it will showcase creative talent, and include live events.

Kohinoor FM will serve the Panjabi speaking population of all ages and faiths (Hindu, Muslim and Sikh) within Leicester. Within its broad-ranging output it will provide programming for members of the community who are socially isolated or who cannot access information through normal media channels because these are broadcast in English or provide programming not relevant to their tastes and interests.

Licences are awarded for a five-year period.

A statement setting out the main determining factors for the award of the three community radio licences referred to above will be available shortly from the Ofcom website.
