Ofcom awards new FM commercial radio licence for North and Mid Wales

Ofcom today announces the award of the new FM local commercial radio licence for North and Mid Wales.

By the closing date of Wednesday 24 September 2008, Ofcom received two applications for the North and Mid Wales licence. After giving careful consideration to each of the applications submitted, the Ofcom Radio Licensing Committee has decided to award the licence to:

Real Radio – contact: Jeff Stephenson, Real Radio Ltd, Ty-Nant Court, Ty-Nant Road, Morganstown, Cardiff CF15 8LW. Telephone: 07710 073021.

E-mail: jeff.stephenson@gmgradio.com

Real Radio is wholly-owned by The Guardian Media Group. It will provide “a full-service Adult Contemporary music station for North and Mid Wales, targeting primarily 25-54 year-olds, including speech, regional information and listener interactivity along with 24-hour news.”

Ofcom estimates that this licence could achieve coverage of around 600,000 adults (aged 15+). However, the exact coverage will be determined by the location of the transmission sites and other technical characteristics.

We expect Real Radio to begin broadcasting at the earliest opportunity and no later than two years from this award date.

Ofcom will publish a statement setting out the key determining factors for the award of this licence shortly.

The licence will be issued for a twelve year period.

Ends.
