Radio stations for Ramadan 2009

Each year Ofcom receives a large number of applications for temporary radio broadcast licences (SRSLs) for radio stations that wish to broadcast during the period of Ramadan. These radio stations usually broadcast to the Muslim community within a 3km (2 mile) radius, for the period of Ramadan and Eid (32 days in total). Subject to applications satisfying the rules set out in our notes of guidance and depending on the availability of suitable FM frequencies, we aim to license one station in each area for which we receive an application. However, in many areas we receive more applications than we are able to award licences to. In order to decide who would be awarded the Radio Ramadan SRSL licences for these contested areas we held a draw on the 19th May at Ofcoms office in London. (Ramadan commences in late August.)

The groups involved were invited to attend the Ofcom draw.

Results for the draw for Radio Ramadan 2009 SRSLs are as follows, with number of applicants (in brackets) and the successful applicants name beside the region:

For all applicants for a licence in a non-contested area (those not requiring a draw), the frequencies will be cleared in mid-June, and confirmation emails and letters will be sent then. The winners of the above draws, will also get frequency confirmation around this time.

The noncontested area licence awards are:

Ofcom expects to license a total of 29 temporary radio services (SRSLs) for Ramadan 2009.
