The healthcare sector is expected to benefit from the widespread deployment of information and communications technologies.The use of technology could empower the individual to take more responsibility in maintaining their health, freeing up resources within the NHS for other, higher priority uses. This study investigates how the healthcare sector will evolve over the next 20 years until 2027. Key technologies and applications are identified and their likely communications requirements assessed.

Ofcom's technical research programme enables us to keep up to date with technologies and trends, so that we can be in the best possible position to execute our regulatory duties. We do not conduct research in-house but make use of external resources, such as private commercial organisations, university departments and government funded research institutions. These reports present the findings of technical work conducted on Ofcom’s behalf.
