Transport

The transport sector is expected to benefit considerably from the deployment of communications technologies. Some applications could be deployed over existing (typically cellular) networks. These might include the provision of congestion and tolling information or route planning across multiple types of public transport, including ticketing. Other applications may be deployed over emerging or entirely new communications systems, for example automatic braking systems, which notify the car behind to apply its brakes in the event of an emergency stop. The combination of these services will provide the consumer with the means to ensure their journey, however executed, meets their requirements in terms of cost, speed, safety and environmental impact. This study investigates how the transport sector will evolve over the next 20 years. Key technologies and applications are identified and their likely communications requirements assessed.
