Captioned Telephony - Extension of 2006 research report - "Feasibility of Additional Telephone Relay Services"

Following on from the publication of the City University study into the Feasibility of Additional Telephone Relay Services, Ofcom asked City University to extend its study with a fuller study of Captioned Telephony, published today.

Ofcom recognises that the availability of an affordable captioned telephony service would reduce communications barriers for many hard of hearing people when using the phone. We note the cessation of Teletec’s CapTel service and recognise the urgency of exploring ways in which additional relay services may be provided.

The study reviews some of the issues arising from the use of captioned telephony, including:

Ofcom will pursue issues raised by the study with stakeholders.
