NEW DIRECTORY ENQUIRY SERVICES FOR NORTHERN IRELAND
In response to Oftels announcement offering new directory enquiry services
to UK consumers, NIACT - the Northern Ireland Advisory Committee on Telecommunications
are pleased with Oftels decision to allocate new numbers to companies wanting to
offer directory enquiry (DQ) services to consumers.
However, NIACT also warn consumers to be cautious as some services could be more
expensive than what we currently pay.
The introduction of new DQ services by the end of this year means that, for the very
first time, Northern Ireland consumers will be able to enjoy the benefits of competition
with more choice, improved quality and competitive prices - with consumers benefiting from
a great range of new services. Some providers will be offering additional services such as
call connection and a range of languages to choose from.
However, NIACT are aware that the use of the 192 number has become part of
everyday life (for the past 30 years) and even though it will be replaced by a six digit
number 118 and a further three digits, consumers should not fear as confusion will
be kept to a minimum with numbers 192 and 153 (international directory enquiry services)
being withdrawn altogether.
Courtenay Thompson, NIACT Chairman says: " It is good news that consumers in
Northern Ireland will soon have a range of services to choose from and NIACT is in favour
of competition and welcome new services as long as they are affordable and better quality:
this will be of benefit to the consumer. "
The business community here also welcome the new service. Frank Hewitt, Chief Executive
of the Chamber of Commerce says: "Any improvement in the directory enquiry service is
to be welcomed. It is a vital part of improving telecoms services to Northern Ireland
Industry and we believe that competition for business will ultimately improve the service
to consumers. There are still a number of aspects which need to be clarified and we would
look forward to receiving further details as they become available."
