Coverage of digital terrestrial television, cable and Channel 5

Although the majority of viewers live in areas where digital television signals can be received, digital satellite signals may not be available to a small number of viewers with very tall trees close to their house or who live near very steep hills. The ITC is working with broadcasters to improve coverage of digital terrestrial television (DTT) signals. In the short- to medium-term, however, some areas are unlikely to be able to receive signals because both digital terrestrial and analogue TV use the same set of analogue frequencies and it is very difficult to find ‘gaps’ in these frequencies to transmit the new digital services on.

Cable television is mainly limited to urban areas. Channel 5 reaches about 80% of the UK population.
