Peter Walker has been with Oftel since December 1993. Previously he had worked for BT for 22 years after graduating from Queens’ College, Cambridge.

Peter is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. He is also President of the UK Branch of FITCE (Federation of Telecommunications Engineers of the European Community).

Career

BT (Post Office until 1981)

1991 - 1993 Planning Manager, London Networks.

Responsible for planning BT’s network in the Greater London zone.

1991 Manager, Customer Networks.

Heading a design team focussing on outsourcing bids to major UK companies.

1990 -1991 Manager, Network Operations.

Seconded to assist the creation of a new BT organisation for global outsourcing (later Syncordia).

1986 -1990 Director Planning, BT International

Responsible for the planning, provisioning, development and utilisation of BT’s networks, exchanges, systems and operational centres. Main tasks in this period were the digitalisation of the telephone network and meeting the needs of the new competitive environment.

1982 - 1986 Head of Planning & Development, BT International

Planning and systems development for BTI’s telephone network.

1981 - 1982 Project Manager, BT International

Implementation of new international exchanges.

1975 - 1981 Head of Group, Exchange Development

Development of international exchanges and their signalling systems.

1971 - 1975 Executive Engineer, Telecoms HQ

Development projects on exchanges and signalling systems.

Other Roles

1977 - 1984 UK representative on International Telecoms Union (ITU) CCITT Study Group XI.

1980 -1984 UK coordinator for ITU CCITT Study Group II
