| Oftel
has published a new booklet that explains our approach to regulation
and the benefits it has delivered for consumers.
The booklet
shows how Oftel has regulated to promote competition by encouraging
new entrants into the telecoms market and protected consumers when
necessary through price controls, universal service obligation and
other measures.
It also explains
how as competition has increased, Oftel will wherever possible withdraw
from sector specific regulation and instead rely on self and co-regulation
and powers under the Competition Act.
The booklet
also explains how Oftel is working with Government and other communications
regulators to create OFCOM the new regulator for the telecommunications
and broadcasting sectors.
