The CLI (Calling
Line Identification) Interest Group was formed to discuss CLI issues
and assist in the development of future policy. It is an open group
which brings together industry members, consumers and consumer organisations,
and government. The Group is facilitated and chaired by Oftel.
Amongst the
issues it has recently been involved in are:
- the development
of a generic, technology-neutral, set of Guidelines about data
protection and privacy principlres as they apply to CLI services
- revising
the current regulatory framework to take account of the new EU
Directives including the Communications Data Protection Directive
and the transition from the Telecommunications Act to the Communications
Bill
- the development
of a 1471 erasure facility
- a review
of the procedures under which customers will be permitted to use
a wider range of presentation number applications
- facilitating
the transfer of cross-border CLI information
- recognition
of the ETP Guidelines (Issue 4) by appropriate parties
- the impact
of new technologies, such as VoIP, on CLI services

Directive
2002/58/EC on the processing of personal data and the protection
of privacy in the eklectronic communications sector (Directive on
privacy and electronic communications)
Recital 34 and
articles 8 and 10 are particularly relevant to CLI services. the
Directive is required to be implemented before 31 October 2003.
