On 14 November
2001, Oftel hosted a workshop on the provision of mobile services
to customers with disabilities. The workshop was attended by representatives
from the mobile industry and by relevant user groups including the
major disability charities.
This initiative
has been launched to encourage mobile operators to develop a Code
of Practice on service provision for customers with disabilities.
The workshop ended with a commitment from the mobile operators to
participate in a working group, alongside consumer representatives,
to draft a Code of Practice which is intended to be ready for adoption
in the second quarter of next year.
The working
group is made up of: Rob Borthwick (Vodafone), Caroline Jacobs (DIEL/Ricability),
Vivienne Pozo (Hearing Concern), Tony Shipley (PhoneAbility), Steve
Tyler (RNIB), Nick Young (T- Mobile) and convened by Frank Phillips
(Oftel). Its first meeting was held on 21 January 2002.
