In response to BT’s announcement this morning to restructure its business, Oftel has issued the following statement:

"The proposals by BT are a significant step to create a structure where there will be greater transparency. Oftel welcomes this and looks forward to seeing further details.

"Transparency is a key component of effective competition. Oftel's strategy is that where there is effective competition, there is less need for regulation. Where competition is not yet effective, then regulation is necessary to protect consumers.

"Oftel is currently consulting on possible future controls on retail price and network charges."
