Ref: 43/00
Date: 12 June 2000

David Edmonds, Director General of Telecommunications, has appointed Keith Long to be Oftel’s new Director of Compliance.

Keith Long joins Oftel from the Department of Trade and Industry where he has held a number of senior policy and operational positions. He is currently joint head of the team taking the Utilities Bill through Parliament.

He has extensive experience of regulatory issues in the financial sector, and was involved in the preparation and introduction of the Financial Services Act 1986.

Commenting on the appointment, David Edmonds said:

"Keith Long is joining Oftel at an important time. It is vital that, at a time of rapid change in the telecoms market, there is fair competition and that Oftel is equipped to tackle anti-competitive behaviour.

"Keith’s wide range of experience of dealing with complex regulatory issues will be very valuable in ensuring that any action Oftel takes is both swift and appropriate to protect the UK’s flourishing telecoms market."

Keith Long takes up his new post at Oftel in September.
