Ref: 51/00
Date: 12 July 2000

Commenting on the European Commission’s publication today of their proposed Regulation on local loop unbundling, David Edmonds Director General of Telecommunications said:

"Oftel welcomes the Commission’s moves to give Member States the legal tools necessary to introduce local loop unbundling.

"With the proposal for BT’s licence condition to require local loop unbundling to come into force from August, Oftel is fully confident that the legal framework will be in place well before the Commission’s deadline of end of 2000.

"Work has already been completed by the industry on the procedures for local loop unbundling and operators will be able to place orders for locating equipment with BT from this September.

"The Commission’s Regulation will also help UK companies enter European markets to provide high speed services to consumers over unbundled local loops."
