The publication of the Radiocommunications Agency's Spectrum Strategy document was welcomed today by Barbara Roche, Parliamentary Secretary for Industry.
Speaking today, Mrs Roche said:
"The radio spectrum is a vital economic resource which must be put to its best possible use. We all rely on the radio spectrum for everyday purposes such as mobile phones, taxis, couriers and, of course, its use by both national and local broadcasters. The Strategy document lays out a strategy for future use of the whole spectrum and sets this in the context of current developments.
"I welcome the Agency's commitment to maintain a dialogue with the industry by inviting comments on the Strategy document. Future editions of the document are therefore able to reflect changes in technology and markets through this active dialogue."
The Strategy covers spectrum used by all industry sectors. It provides both a broad overview and detailed tables to stimulate discussion and promote greater understanding by all radio spectrum users, including those planning to develop new types of service or pioneer new uses of radio. The document brings together in one volume, sections on all radio use divided into ten industry sectors (from "aeronautical" to "technology development"). Sections are also included on topics that influence strategic decisions on future use of the spectrum in the UK such as the Wireless Telegraphy Bill, the International Framework of Spectrum Management, and the Economic Impact of Radio.
