The DTI has received positive responses from industry to its consultation on the framework for licensing operators to provide the UKs Third Generation of mobile communications systems.
The Third Generation of mobile communications will have the capacity to provide access to a large number of entertainment and information services, such as:
business services, including virtual banking and full mobile office services
home shopping
real time video, including video conferencing
the wealth of material on the Internet
Speaking today, Barbara Roche, Minister for Industry, said:
"I am very pleased to see such a positive response from industry to the Multimedia Communications on the Move consultation document. It is a reflection of the Governments commitment to work in partnership with industry that has brought about this positive response. As well as creating new jobs and keeping Britain at the forefront of mobile communications, Third Generation mobile communications will ultimately benefit the consumer with a better and wider choice of service."
The full responses, except for material requested to be kept confidential, are now available on the Radiocommunications Agencys Web site. The responses will be taken fully into account in working out the details of the Third Generation licensing process. The DTI will continue to consult industry on these as they are developed.

4. Third Generation mobile communications systems are expected to deliver high speed multimedia information and entertainment services to people on a global basis and provide them with mobile access to new innovative services. These services are only now starting to be conceivable over the fixed nerwork. The clear goal of Third Generation systems is to offer mobile personalised multimedia communications to the mass market regardless of location, network or terminal, i. e. a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service- UMTS.
