Wireless Telegraphy Act

The Radiocommunications Agency is the regulatory authority for most civil radio in the United Kingdom. Regulation is necessary so that all those who wish to use radio can do so without their transmissions being subjected to interference. The regulations governing maritime radio are, on the whole, contained in the International Radio Regulations and the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949, as amended. The Act makes it an offense to install or use radio transmission equipment without a valid licence.

Frequencies

The use of frequencies allocated to the maritime radionavigation and radiolocation services is agreed either on a UK basis or on a world-wide basis by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) of which the UK is a member. These frequencies range from LF (30KHz) to SHF (30GHz).

Antenna siting

Antennas sited on masts which are 30m or more above ground level, or 300m or more above mean sea level will require additional site clearance before we can consider issuing a licence. Site clearance is liable to add considerably to the time taken to issue a licence. It is therefore recommended that antennas are kept below these heights.

Shared masts on which to site antennas are commonly used. However, this may cause intermodulation interference problems between different users of the mast. In the event of such a problem we will try to allocate an alternative frequency (if it is not an equipment fault) but will not accept responsibility for such interference nor for costs incurred in either changing frequencies or vacating a mast. Please bear this in mind when deciding on your antenna location.

Erection of an antenna may require planning permission. Contact your local council.

  • any other organisation?
(go to question 6)

5 Give your full name

For a partnership, give the full name of one partner (this partner must also sign the declaration), and supply a separate list of the full names of all other partners.

Surname

Forenames

6 Give the registered company name or full title of the organisation and the registered company number

7 What is the trading name, if any, of the business which will operate this service?

For a large operation, give the name of the operating division.

8 Give the address of the individual/ partnership/registered company to which the licence is to be issued

postcode

9 Give the name and telephone number of the person in your organisation who is responsible for your radio service(s)   Names

Fax
Telephone
10 Give the address to which corresp- ondence is to be sent   postcode
11 Give the name and address to which requests for payment are to be sent   postcode
12 Describe the nature of your business
13 Please give as full a description as possible of what the radios will be used for and indicate type of operational area (river, harbour, sea)
14 Please give maximum distance of intended operation from base station.

15 Indicate the proposed maximum Effective Radiated Power (ERP) in dBW

Note: ERP (in a given direction) is the product of the power supplied to the antenna and its gain relative to a half-wavelength dipole in a given direction. The maximum ERP is the ERP in the direction of maximum radiation and is expressed in Watts. The power supplied to the antenna is expressed in the form of peak envelope power (PX or pX). The peak envelope power is defined as the average power supplied to the antenna transmission line by a transmitter during one radio frequency cycle at the crest of the modulation envelope taken under normal operation conditions. The Agency will ultimately decide on the permitted ERP.

16 Indicate the frequency(ies) on which you prefer to operate and/or the total number of frequencies required

Please note that it may not be possible to assign the frequency of your choice.

17 Please give the class of emission including the necessary bandwidth

(See "Guide to Emissions" RA97)

Please note that for VHF DGPS the bandwidth should not exceed 12.5 kHz and for MF/HF DGPS it should not exceed 500Hz.

18 If the emission code consists of pulses, please give
(a) Pulse repetition rate   pulses/sec
(b) Pulse width   micro seconds
(c) Pulse rise time   nano seconds

19 If the emission consists of quantized or digital information please indicate the bit rate (bps)   bits/sec

The application will be delayed if this information is not given or proves to be inaccurate.

 Grid letters

 Eastings

 Northings

26 Give the height of the top of the antenna above mean ground level

  metres
27 Give the height of the base of the antenna above mean sea level   metres
28 If the antenna beam is fixed, please give the direction of maximum radiation in:

azimuth degrees East from North
elevation degrees from horizontal

29 If the antenna beam rotates give:

(a) beam rotation or azimuth speed

  degrees per minute
(b) beam vertical scan speed   degrees per minute
