Short Range Business Paging Service: Notes for Users |
![]()
This information sheet explains the Short Range Business Paging (SRBP) service, the SRBP licence and the benefits and responsibilities of SRBP use.
The SRBP service is a short range, one-way tone or text message paging service for business use. Messages are sent from a base station to nearby pocket units. The pocket units receive messages but do not transmit.
The range of the service depends on circumstances but may be 400 metres in open country and less in built up areas. A licence is required to use the service.
Each licence permits any number of paging systems to be used in connection with the licensee's business provided licence conditions are followed.
The SRBP service has no licence fee and the frequency is shared with other users without planning or control by the Agency. SRBP is not suitable for safety of life use, or where a channel with planned control of paging use is required. There will be no Agency involvement in channel sharing disputes between SRBP users.
You should apply for a SRBP licence by completing application form RA 283 and posting it to the address given on the form. Form RA 283 may be available from your equipment supplier and can also be obtained by telephoning 020 7211 0211. Your licence will normally be dispatched within ten working days of receipt if you have completed the form correctly.
Some equipment suppliers have a special licensing arrangement that permits you to use your paging system immediately after purchase for a short period while your own application is being processed. They will inform you if this is the case. Otherwise you should not use your paging system until you are in possession of a valid licence.
You should ask your supplier for a paging system suitable for the SRBP service. The base station and pocket units need to be type approved, tuned only to the SRBP channel and to transmit in the correct power range. Your supplier can advise on all these matters but you should be aware that ultimately compliance with licence conditions is your responsibility as licensee.
Accessories that affect any pager characteristics should not be used and you should confirm that any replacement antenna does not cause you to break licence conditions.
There is only one SRBP channel at 461.3000 MHz. This channel is expected to change frequency in the future and you should either ensure that your system can be adjusted to cover the full range of the 450 to 470 MHz band, or be prepared to replace or cease using your system when the change takes place. The Agency will write to licensees when more details are available.
SRBP service pagers should be used only for your own business communication. It is expected that the channel will become particularly busy in cities, or where large numbers of people gather e.g. sporting events, and all users will benefit if pagers are used only for short and essential business communication.
A licence permits a named licensee, or someone under the control and authority of the licensee, to use any number of Short Range Business Pagers, in accordance with licence conditions for the duration of the licence. The licensee may be an individual, limited company, partnership or other organisation. The pagers must only be used for the business of the licensee and must be under the control and authority of the licensee. Note that a licence does not guarantee that the paging channel will be available at any particular place and time with capacity to carry your messages.
If your details change you should contact SRBP Licensing, address and telephone numbers are below. Licences are not transferable from one licensee to another and, in the event that your legal identity changes, you will need to apply for a new licence.
