Questions frequently asked about SRB Paging

Q. What is SRBP?

A. SRBP provides a short range paging service for which you will need paging equipment and a licence. SRBP does not replace existing SRBR services. The paging service allows non-speech paging for one-way communication from your own base station. SRBP range depends on circumstances but may be 400 metres in open country and less in built up areas. Use of SRBP channels is unplanned and the Agency cannot assist with channel sharing problems between SRBP licensees.

Q. Do I need a SRBP licence?

A. Yes, you need to be in possession of a licence from the Radiocommunications Agency before you can use the SRBP service. Exceptionally some paging dealers will have a special licensing arrangement that permits you to use your pagers immediately after purchase for a short period while your own application is being processed. They will inform you if this is the case.

Q. What does the SRBP licence permit?

A. It permits the licensee, and those under the control and authority of the licensee, to use SRBP services for the business of the licensee. Use must be within licence conditions which specify amongst other things, the channels and power that can be used. A licence does not guarantee that a channel will have the capacity to carry your messages at any particular location and time. SRBP may only be used in England, Scotland and Wales.

Q. What equipment can I use for SRBP?

A. The paging equipment should be type approved. This means that it meets certain technical standards. It should also be adjusted so that it operates within your licence conditions, particularly its power and frequencies. You should ask your radio supplier for a paging system suitable for the SRBP service.

Q. How should I use SRBP?

A. The SRBP service should only be used to send short business related calls.

Q. Where do I direct enquiries?

A. More information about SRBP is contained in the Agency information sheet RA280 (SRBP service: notes for users) and RA 282 ( SRB paging: notes for radio suppliers and manufacturers). If your enquiry is not answered by the information sheets you should contact SRBP Licensing on 020 7211 0193/0201. Enquiries on the use your paging system should be directed to your radio supplier. The Agencies Local Licensing Centres are not able to deal with SRBP enquiries.

Q. Where do I find out about other radio services for business?

A. You may ask your radio supplier or an industry association. The Radiocommunications Agency publishes many information sheets and a list of these is contained in the information sheet RAO which is available form the RA Library on 020 7211 0502/0505.
