Consultation on Public use of Licence Exempt Spectrum

Following the Government's decision to allow the provision of public services in the 2.4 GHz licence-exempt band (announced in Press Notice P/2002/345 issued 10 June 2002), the Spectrum Management Advisory Group (SMAG) hosted a consultation event on 20 June 2002 at the Institution for Mechanical Engineers. The event was chaired by Dr John Forrest, the Chairman of SMAG and presentations were made by the Radiocommunications Agency and OFTEL.

Statutory Instrument (SI 2002/1590)

 

The SI permitting the provision of public services in the 2.4 GHz band was laid in Parliament on 21 June 2002 and is due to come into force on 8 July 2002.
The SI will be available on the HMSO Website after 8 July 2002

Guidance on Telecommunications Act Licensing available from Communications and Information Industries Directorate (CII)

 

Although a Wireless Telegraphy Act Licence will no longer be required for such operation, operators wishing to deliver a commercial telecommunications service in the 2.4GHz band should contact CII for advice and guidance on any Telecommunications Act obligations
