Dear licensee,
Changes to amateur Radio Licence Class A/B
I wrote to you on 20 September, to notify you of a change to the UK Amateur Radio Licensing system.
Earlier this year the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications (CEPT) recommended that the Morse requirement for their Class 1 licence (equivalent to a UK Class A) be reduced to 5wpm. This provided us with an opportunity to review our licensing structure. To this end we have reduced the Morse requirement for the Class A licence to 5wpm and have incorporated the Class A/B into the Class A licence.
As a Class A/B licence holder, you were offered the choice of either retaining your existing M5 callsign or change to a M0 callsign. You will not be allowed to use two callsigns (i.e. M5 and M0). If you currently hold both a Class A and a Class A/B licence, please note that the A/B licence will automatically be cancelled at the end of November. If you have already paid your A/B renewal fee, this will be refunded to you. The privileges of the Class A licence remain unchanged.
If you have not yet decided which callsign sequence you would like to adopt, could you please write to, or telephone, me giving your current call sign details and let me know which option you wish to take. I would be grateful for a response by 30 November.
You may wish to check if a particular M0 call sign is available before you make your decision, the Licensing Centre (Telephone 0117 925 8333) will be able to answer your question. Callsigns cannot, however, be reserved and are issued on a first come first served basis.
If you have any questions, or would like more information on the changes, please give me a call.
Yours faithfully
D J P Daly
