International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

The ITU consists of 189 Member States and 580 Sector members. It is a forum where members co-operate for the improvement and rational use of telecommunications worldwide.

ITU objectives are to promote:

the development, efficient operation and general availability of telecommunications facilities and services

*

The development of telecommunications in developing countries which includes the extension of beneficial telecommunications globally

*

the adoption of a broader approach to telecommunications issues in the global information economy and society

Objectives are achieved via organisation of the ITU internally around three sectors; with each having their own programme of conferences and study group work:

* Radiocommunication (ITU-R)

Following the Plenipotentiary Conference in Marrakesh a review of the ITU’s management and structure is currently underway to improve its effectiveness in meeting its objective.
