Introduction to the Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption) Regulations 1999 |
The Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption) Regulations 1999 are part of an ongoing programme of
process simplification to reduce unwieldy and overcomplicated regulations. These are the
first consolidated exemption regulations which revoke and replace 9 existing orders
updating facilities for new standards to be used.
The exemptions (i.e. conditions under which apparatus needs no licence) will also permit many new pieces of short range equipment to use new frequencies allocated to them. This includes:
new generation of sophisticated satellite and terrestrial telephone terminals
new short range two way "walkie-talkie" type communication system-
PMR 446
personal alarms for lone workers and elderly
wireless hearing aids
wireless links to headphones for use in vehicles
These exemption regulations complement the thousands of pieces of radio equipment and devices, including electronic car door keys, personal stereos and avalanche detection equipment.
Further information is detailed in the Regulatory Impact Assessment and copies of the Statutory Instrument are also on this site.
