Important Information relating to Temporary Use Licences in the 5GHz band

Schools, colleges and other organisations should be aware that at present there is a temporary use licence requirement for 802.11a WLANs for non-commercial use.

It is hoped that the technical requirements will shortly be ratified and that this band will be licence-exempt by the end of 2002. Prospective users must be aware, however, that any equipment used under a temporary use licence must conform to the final version of IR2006 or it will not be eligible for use on a licence exempt basis. Please see Licensing arrangements for 5GHz radio LANs and similar services for further details.

Schools and other organisations would therefore be advised to gain the necessary assurances from their supplier or a technical authority before making any commitment.
