Mobile Phone Base Stations - Audit |
![]()
In 2001 the RA undertook an audit programme of mobile phone base stations with a focus on base stations sited on schools. The aim of the audit programme was to ensure that emissions from mobile phone base stations were below the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines.
The first audit programme started in December 2000 and was completed in December 2001. The results from the surveys are published on the RA website. The audit results, indicated in every case, levels of radiation far below those specified in the guidelines of the ICNIRP. The lowest recorded level was 1/825,764 and the highest recorded level was 1/279 below the guidelines.
The 2002 programme of audits of mobile phone masts comprised surveys at hospitals and schools located near to a mast. The survey results are again published on the RA website, and can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate button below. In 2002 the lowest recorded level was 1/19907515 and the highest recorded level was 1/731 below the guidelines.
The RA has also undertaken some surveys of multi-user sites. These are aimed to give a more complete picture of emission levels across a wider range of radio frequencies.
The mobile phone base station audit programme is continuing through 2003. Hospitals and schools located near to a mast are again invited to register. Also old peoples homes are particularly invited to register, and other sensitive sites will be considered on a case by case basis.
