A Strategy for the Future Use of the Radio Spectrum in the UK
Second Edition May 1996 - Aeronautical

4.1 Aeronautical Services

As with most industries the use of radio spectrum by aeronautical services is increasing. One major area of concern is the congestion in the VHF communication band. ICAO has decided to reduce the channel separation within the band from the current 25 kHz to 8.33 kHz, however, until this is implemented certain VHF requirements will not be met.

Data applications using satellite and terrestrial VHF communications, and also support for navigation services in the VHF and 5 GHz bands, are in development and will shortly be implemented operationally.

A major decision to implement the Microwave Landing System (MLS) at Heathrow and Gatwick has been taken in principle by airport operators, further expansion beyond these airports is expected.
